The first time I heard of a HBCU (historically black college/university) was the age of 17. My junior year of high school, I had my mind set on applying to my dream schools, Old Dominion University and Virginia Commonwealth University. Which later I find out were PWIs (Predominantly White Institutions) and just based on my SAT scores, I was not getting in. Long story short I got accepted into Bowie State, as an out of state student and it's been an experience... It's been the best 2 years of my life as well as the most challenging 2 years of my life. The fact that I am on my own but not alone in this journey is what makes it unique and scary. The first time I realized that I was on my own was when I went to this party, and I realized that I didn't have a curfew lol. I stayed out until like 5 in the morning, and still made it to my 10 o clock class. College is it's own world honestly.
